Location: Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Life in Jeddah is different. As the gateway to Mecca and Medina, and the most important port on the Red Sea, the city has historically been an international meeting place and a vital commercial center of western Saudi Arabia. Filled with the “beautiful coral architecture of historic buildings” and a culture dominated by fishing and seafood, it is the most cosmopolitan, and friendly, city in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The Lonely Planet champions Jeddah’s “upscale department stores and malls” and “international cuisine and seafood”. It is also highlighted as a great location for diving, with numerous dive sites and wrecks to explore, year-round (note – you will need need to obtain a Saudi issued dive permit).

Neil Bunting (an advocate of life in Saudi Arabia) writing for The Telegraph, tells us that “life in Saudi Arabia is more fun than you might think”. His primary motivation is to, in his words, “bust a myth: Saudi Arabia, in my opinion, is not a hardship posting”.

“The experiences that you gain working overseas are fantastic and it is certainly not something you just put up with to save money. Learning about new cultures, visiting different places and working with local people – as well as expatriates from all around the world – broadens your perspective and makes you more open-minded.”

“Saudis are friendly, generous and hospitable people and not like the stereotypes you might have been presented with.”

“If you are open to discovering the delights of Middle-Eastern cuisine, a different lifestyle, a much more varied landscape than you might have imagined; if you like the heat and can manage without rain, you might find Saudi Arabia has great appeal.” Read the full article here.
